Once Stroopwafels were made by bakers using leftovers such as breadcrumbs and excess dough mixed together, baked and sweetened with a syrup from ‘dirty’ sugar. The result was a very cheap delicacy for the poor called ‘armenkoek’ (poor mans cookie). Yes, nowadays our waffles still contain crumbs and brown sugar. And that’s why they’re so delicious! We bake ‘m right before your eyes. And no, we don’t try to sell ridiculous expensive toppings that only ruin the rich taste and the experience of taking a bite out of an fresh authentic hot Dutch Stroopwafel!
